The Tenno
”More than human… but once a child like any other.”

PERSONALITY

Disciplined, honor-bound, and ruthless in battle, the Tenno’s warrior personality is very much at odds with their youthful appearance. They do not see themself as a child—indeed, they have not been a child for a very, very long time. Instead, they’ve spent the vast majority of their lifetime indistinguishable from their Warframes: a faceless, voiceless soldier of the Lotus, dedicated only to working her will across the solar system while honing their own skills and knowledge.

However, freed from their deceptive dream, the Tenno is now in the process of rediscovering who they are—not a vengeful spirit, moving between Warframes like a ghost, but a flesh and blood child, with memories, principles, and preferences they are only now beginning to remember.

Personality-wise, the Tenno is headstrong, proud, and impulsive, even going as far as to occasionally defy the Lotus. Though they hate being called a child, they show a few more childlike traits, including occasional bouts of teenage petulance and separation anxiety when not in contact with the Lotus, whom they see as a maternal figure.

The Tenno also cannot stand selfishness and greed, seeing it as the primary sin of the hated Orokin. Yet, the Tenno is not a purely moral character themself. They’re responsible for wiping out both the Orokin and the Sentients, putting their bodycount in the millions, if not billions. Even after regaining their memory of who they are, they have no qualm killing hundreds of people at the Lotus’s request. If she tells the Tenno to leave no one in a location alive, they don’t hesitate to carry out her command. At the same time, the Tenno has a great amount of compassion for people and creatures they feel are like them: broken, unlovable, and lost. It is this empathy that allows them to connect with and control their Warframes, not through force, but by soothing their pain and bringing them peace.

ABOUT

The Tenno is an ageless entity, formed as the result of a human child becoming corrupted by Void energy. They came into being after a civilian ship, the Zariman Ten-Zero, became trapped for years in the Void, a region of chaotic subdimensional space. Though the volatile Void energy drove all the adults on the ship insane, the children were able to adapt to it through the intercession of a Void entity known only as The Man In The Wall, becoming unaging, Void-touched beings possessing destructive psychic powers. With no other choice to survive, they killed their crazed parents and forged their own “family” with one another.

However, even after being rescued and returned to normal space, their troubles were far from over. Feared and reviled as devils, they were turned into instruments of war to be used in the Orokin conflict against the Sentients. By placing the children into a cryo-induced dream, the Orokin found they could connect them to tortured bio-weapons known as Warframes, forming near-unstoppable super soldiers. The children became known as Tenno and remained connected to their Warframes for centuries, to the point where they no longer remembered anything but the “Dream.” However, they still had the awareness to hate what the Orokin had done to them and after defeating the Sentients, would turn on their old masters and almost completely wipe them out.

Eventually, the children would be discovered by a Sentient known as Natah, an assassin sent to destroy the Tenno. However, after seeing their true forms, Natah could not bring herself to complete her mission and instead vowed to protect the Tenno from a hostile system. She relocated the sleeping Tenno to Lua, Earth’s former moon now submerged in the Void, becoming the Lotus: both the protector and the commander of the Tenno, to whom each is zealously loyal. However, though the Lotus spared the lives of the Tenno, she did not free them from their dream, instead allowing it to persist for fear that the truth would drive them mad. Thus, the Tenno remained unaware of their true nature for centuries more, until a Sentient plot to destroy Lua forced the Lotus to wake them. With the Tenno now inhabiting their true forms—that of children—the Lotus told them of their past on the Zariman and how the once-lost children came to be as they are now.

APPEARANCE

The Tenno appears to be a young teenage human of indeterminate gender. They have dark, closely-shaven hair and olive skin, as well as unusual, golden eyes with a ring of black around the irises. It’s not only the color that’s strange, though. On closer inspection, one can see that their pupils are constantly shifting between an empty ring and a ring surrounding a small circle. They also occasionally become possessed by "The Man In The Wall," a malevolent Void entity that took an interest in the Zariman children and played some role in their survival on the derelict. When possessed by The Man In The Wall, the Tenno's eyes become completely black, lit by tiny stars. In addition, the Tenno has five small metal implants on their face—one on either temple, two lining their jaw, and one on their chin—which seem to somehow aid in the Transference process. They also have metal clasps on the lobe and shell of their ears for similar purposes, though these are easily removed.

Aurally, the Tenno has a soft voice that matches their youthful appearance. They wear a strange-looking suit of form-fitting black armor dotted with golden lights.

ABILITIES

The Tenno’s most powerful ability is known as “Transference,” which refers to their ability to psychically connect with and control Warframes and other bio-mechanical Orokin constructs. Transference also doubles as a form of limited teleportation, as they are able to teleport into their Warframe across great distances, assuming they are unimpeded by anti-Transference measures such as an Orphix field. Once Transference is activated, the Tenno's physical form dissipates and their consciousness is transferred into their host. While using Transference, they can also communicate with their Warframe and see their Warframe’s memories.

The Tenno can channel powerful beams of void energy through their hands, which can be strong enough to blast through unarmored targets. They can also unleash a much stronger, though much less precise version of this attack by channeling the Void energy through their chest, resulting in a massive sustained beam of disintegrating force. The Tenno can only maintain this beam for a few seconds before becoming exhausted.
